Description: Plans, coordinates and directs the functions of the Conservatory Creative Arts program; ensures the quality of programs and safety of youth at all times; provides guidance and role modeling to youth and ensures safety and a positive experience for campers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. Guides the work of dance and performance in helping children and youth to succeed in school by increasing their involvement and motivation, and helping them to set personal goals;
Provides training and development of camper for dance, public speaking, performance and service learning;
Provide appropriate lessons for instruction time;
Review assigned homework with students and re-teach skills if necessary;
Prepare students for recitals and presentations;
Supervises the maintenance and daily operations of the program equipment;
Recommends and develops activities which will develop creative abilities, motor and learning skills of students;
Coordinates the program and activity with the policies and operating procedures of camp;
Maintains discipline and acceptable behaviors of students, which will create an atmosphere of friendliness and security during all program periods;
Supervises and organizes an assigned group of campers during scheduled and unscheduled blocks of time in cooperation with camp rules and regulations;
Promotes and stimulates participation of campers to ensure a pleasant camp experience;
Participate and assist in various classes as assigned;
Schedules performances and ensures that all necessary supplies for a performance are donated or purchased.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Participate enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions;
Sit with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed;
Keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection;
Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT: Camp Equipment Conservatory Equipment
Required Experience: Knowledge and ability to teach dance, public speaking and staging;
Ability to foster team work with youth in learning how to develop and use props and create costumes for performances;
Ability to assist youth in planning and goal setting for personal and team activities;
Ability to recruit and train volunteers;
Ability to work with diverse people from all social and economic backgrounds.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff;
Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques;
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity;
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid;
Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers;
Ability to demonstrate exercises and dance routines.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Some physical requirements of the Creative Arts Instructor position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
Required Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D. required AND six months experience teaching creative arts, with the ability to perform and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: CPR and First Aid Certified
